In our second chapter of “Visual Storytelling” I was drawn to a couple of main ideas. I appreciated how many times this chapter emphasizes the point that the audience connection with the characters you create (specifically the protagonist) is the most important part in film making. There were many times throughout the reading that I would summarize a paragraph by writing “connection is key” or “info. info. info.”, which is another point that causes deeper connection. In order for your audience to feel like they truly know your protagonist, or are getting to know them well, is giving the audience enough information about the protagonist. If you think enough is enough, it may not be: “Audience members are hungry for information”.

This article provides another way of describing audience connection with characters. The techniques to engage your audience are as follows: 1. Physical Suturing 2. Emotional Suturing and 3. Moral Suturing.
The third technique given by Movie Outline is what I found most relatable to our books way of listing out methods of connection. Knowing your protagonist’s “moral premise” will help your audience understand or empathize with your character’s actions, reactions, and wants.
